Three facial SPF products that you actually want to wear daily

Best facial SPF products, Thank you Farmer Sun Project Water Sun Cream, Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defence SPF30, ARK Skincare Skin Protector SPF30 Primer

Using facial SPF products daily should be a piece of common knowledge by now, I think most of us are aware of the danger of sun rays and the damage they cause to our skin. Not only increasing the risk of skin cancer but also speeding up the aging process, our skin loses its elasticity and firmness resulting in premature wrinkles, sagging skin and we can also get sun damage showing up as dark, hyperpigmentation spots.

Yet many people avoid using facial SPF daily mainly because it used to be hard to find one that would feel light and comfortable without that heavy, cloying feeling many sunscreens have.
I've been one of these people despite my knowledge. Finding the right product which is lightweight, doesn't leave a white cast on the skin, doesn't break me out and works well under makeup, as well as with other skincare products applied underneath, has been a long process but finally I have found three products that work well for my skin and I wanted to share them with you if you need some suggestions.

There are two types of sunscreens: chemical and physical.

Physical sunscreens sit on the surface of the skin and block and scatter UV rays. They do this via mineral filters, the most common of which are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They're usually thicker in consistency and have a tendency to leave a white cast on the skin, hence they're might not be the first choice for people with darker complexion or those with oily skin. They can be less irritating for sensitive skin then some chemical sunscreens though.

The vast majority of sunscreens fall into the chemical category. These sunscreens contain active sun filters that penetrate the skin and absorb UV rays to prevent them from causing damage. Chemical sunscreens are able to provide highly effective protection without necessarily needing to be in high concentrations. This means they can be formulated with a lightweight, non-sticky feel that is ideal for daily wear.

There isn't really one better option, in my opinion, unless you're sensitive to some ingredients. Often SPF products contain both, chemical and physical sunscreens.

Remember that in case of a sunscreen we can't follow the rule 'a little goes a long way', it boils my blood when I hear 'beauty influencers' saying that when reviewing SPF product. To get the right protection you need to apply your sunscreen liberally, it should be roughly half a teaspoon of a product rubbed on your face and another half a teaspoon for the neck.

This sunscreen, from Korean skincare brand, is my favourite out of the three because it truly is very lightweight and feels more like a moisturiser then SPF product. It absorbs into the skin quickly, feels hydrating, it doesn't leave a white cast, nor greasy residue. It adds a beautiful glow to the skin but it doesn't make my combination skin any more oily throughout the day. It works excellent under makeup, once I've given it a few minutes to absorb, as I do with all my skincare products before applying makeup. I could easily use it as my only moisturiser, applied on top of a serum, in Summer months when my skin is less dehydrated.
Fantastic sunscreen especially for those with normal to dry or combination skin, I think those with dry skin could definitely use it as well provided they have a good skincare routine in place caring for their dry skin needs. I'm not sure if those with oily skin would appreciate the glow this sunscreen adds to the skin but, as I mentioned before, it's not a greasy residue and I don't get shinier throughout the day because of using this SPF.

Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defence SPF30*, £49 for 50ml

Ingredients:

Water/Aqua/Eau, Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Silica, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Cordyceps Sinensis Extract, Trametes Versicolor Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Lavandula Spica (Lavender) Flower Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Chloride, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Pentylene Glycol, Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Propanediol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Sodium Citrate, Propylene Carbonate, Xanthan Gum, Caprylyl Glycol, Bisabolol, Lavandula Hybrida Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Linalool, Limonene

Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defence SPF30

The latest innovation from Dermalogica offers invisible, lightweight physical sunscreen. It really is different from the heavy, greasy mineral sunscreens I've used in the past. The texture is a bit thicker and it needs more massaging into the skin but once you rub it in well it definitely gives no white residue. It adds some glow to the skin and although it feels a little bit greasy at first it sinks in well and works great under makeup. I wasn't sure I would like it when I first tried it because it was a bit heavier than the Thank You Farmer sunscreen I love but it does work for my skin once it's absorbed.

This sunscreen is perfect for those with sensitive skin who don't tolerate well chemical sunscreens. I also think those with dry skin will particularly like it. I wore this SPF under makeup for a long shift at work and my makeup was holding well in place and I didn't have an issue with my skin becoming greasy/oily, so unless your skin is very oily then I think you would definitely enjoy this sunscreen.

ARK Skincare Skin Protector SPF30 Primer

This product is almost a hybrid between skincare, SPF and makeup because it works well as a moisturiser, offers sun protection but also smoothes out the skin and is a great makeup primer.
I loved using it, especially in colder months when my skin was craving more hydration. It's not heavy, nor greasy, even if applied liberally, as it should be to give the sun protection. It gives a subtly luminous finish and makes the foundation applied on top look smoother and last well throughout the day. Again, this product would be perfect for any skin type, maybe apart from very oily, and of course, it doesn't have to be used as a makeup primer but also on its own.

It's very important to use facial sunscreen every day, even in Winter and on cloudy days, so finding one that is a pleasure to use, works well with other skincare products and makeup is crucial. You won't be tempted to skip your SPF if it's one that suits your skin and your needs perfectly. I have finally found some that tick all the boxes for me and I highly recommend them to you :)

What's your favourite facial sunscreen?
