REN Perfect Canvas Skin Finishing Serum - the perfect makeup primer?

Makeup primer is a product that some people swear by it and some can't be bothered with it. I'm standing somewhere in the middle as I reach for it when I want my makeup to look more flawless and last longer like for long shifts at work, going out etc. but most days I don't use it. There are lots of primers on the market which claim to do different things like hydrate, blur the appearance of large pores and wrinkles, mattify, add glow to the skin, and add longevity to your foundation, so depending on your skin type and concerns you can pick your perfect product. I have tried lots of primers in order to find the one that would help my skin appear smoother, pores less visible, control the shine in my T-zone but hydrate my drier areas and make my makeup to last longer throughout the day. It's fair to say that I'm yet to find one that would do all these things because if something is great at correcting one 'issue' it's not that great at others. But there are some primers that are very close to perfection and I am excited to share with you today one of those gems.
REN Perfect Canvas Skin Finishing Serum

REN Perfect Canvas Skin Finishing Serum Primer, £50 for 30ml
Aqua (Water), Lactococcus Ferment Lysate, Glycerin, Maltose, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide, Agave Tequilana Leaf Extract, Xanthan Gum, Parfum* (Fragrance), Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Sodium Chloride, Glucose, Limonene, Linalool* 100% Natural Fragrance
This silicone-free formula is perfect to use after moisturiser to smooth out the skin, giving it a semi-matte, non drying, finish, the ‘perfect canvas’ for make up application. This primer is like a hybrid between makeup and skincare as it contains nourishing and good for skin ingredients as oppose to many makeup primers which are basically full of sillicones just to sit on top of your skin. Probiotic extract speeds up epidermal growth to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier, boosting cell production and essential structural proteins. Hyalurons (naturally found in the skin) convert to hyaluronic acid to increase hydration, elasticity and aid in the reduction of wrinkle depth, while agave tequilana extract (yup, you read that right, LOL!) provides an instant filling, mattifying effect without the need for silicones. Finally, alpha-glucans rebalance the skin by promoting friendly bacteria, which leads to healthier skin.
Obviously if you'd like to take the advantage of all those benefits you should use the serum/primer daily which is not the case for me as some days I don't wear any makeup and I have other skincare products in my regular rotation. But I'm happy to use product which acts like a makeup primer but it's also good for my skin.

The Perfect Canvas Skin Finishing Serum comes in a glass bottle with a pipette style of applicator and the formula is very watery with a bit of slip to it. Just a few drops are enough for the whole face. You need to massage it into your skin like you would a skincare product, once you do it you'll feel the product getting a bit tacky which is a sign that this will help your makeup to adhere to it and last longer. I let the primer absorbs fully before applying foundation and I love that there's no greasy, slippery feeling to it like many other primers have. My foundation applies beautifully on top of the Perfect Canvas Serum and it looks so much nicer on the skin. The first time I used it I couldn't stop looking in the mirror as my makeup looked so much better then with any other primer.
The REN offering doesn't fill in large pores as much as some other thicker, silicon primers but it blurs their appearance making the skin look softer and perfected. I wouldn't say it helps mattifying the skin but it certainly doesn't make it oilier, if your skin is really oily then this might not be enough for you to help controlling the extra shine on your skin but for my mature, combination skin it's good enough.
When I use the Perfect Canvas Skin Finishing Serum as my primer not only my makeup definitely looks so much better and it lasts well throughout the day but my skin is well hydrated and it looks more radiant.
If you're not a fan of those silicon heavy primers then I highly recommend checking out the REN Perfect Canvas Serum as it really is a product that can be used as a part of your makeup routine or on its own to leave your skin looking completely natural but instantly perfected.
Have you tried this product? What is your favourite makeup primer?
