Tips on keeping your neck looking younger for longer

I remember reading somewhere that nothing betrays a woman's age then a sagging, crepey neck and how important it is to look after it. That was about 20 years ago and I still have those words in my head and try to do my best to avoid the wrinkly neck for as long as possible. Don't get me wrong, there's no shame in getting older and showing signs of our age but I'm all for preserving the youthful look and trying to look my best at every age because that's what makes me feel happy and confident.
While many of us take good care of the skin on the face I can bet my bottom dollar that neck is usually a bit neglected. Considering skin on our neck is thinner and more delicate, with less sebaceous glands to protect it by secreting oil, is one of few body parts exposed to sunshine and UVA/UVB rays daily, it starts showing off the signs of aging quicker then any other part of our body. But we can help it look its best for longer following some simple steps.
how to keep your neck looking younger for longer

1. Moisturise
Every time you moisturise you face apply moisturiser to you your neck and décolletage as well, the skin on your neck gets dry quickly so don't skip that step. And during the colder months when you use your scarfs regularly be very generous with the cream on your neck. Also if you're using hydrating face masks, apply them on your neck too. Using gentle retinol treatments, like the Merumaya one (review) on your neck is a good practice as well.
2. Exfoliate
But rather then using harsh scrubs reach for gentle chemical exfoliators. If you're using acid toners/face pads apply the product on your neck as well. Getting rid of dead skin cells makes the neck looks smoother and younger.
3. Apply sunscreen
This is something I'm guilty of not doing properly either but we have to remember that the skin on our neck needs protection from harmful sun rays as much as the rest of our body. So when you apply your facial sunscreen to your face take it down the neck as well.
4. Limit your screen time
Nowadays we spend many hours during the day hunched over our laptops and phones developing not only wrinkles and lines on our necks and décolletage but suffering with 'tech neck' which is an ongoing neck and shoulders pain. It's important to take frequent breaks during our working hours to relax and stretch the muscles, so move around and change your position every hour or so.
5. Exercise your neck
Tilt your head from one side to the other, move it forward and backwards, turn left and right, these simple exercises help relieve the neck pain but also stretch the muscles and help the skin to look firmer. Any jaw exercises, like smiling as wild as we can or lowering the corners of our mouth in a disgust pout tighten the muscles and help the neck look firmer.
6. Sleep in the right position
I know some of you like to have lots of pillows in bed and sleep on them but they're not only not good for how your neck will look but also for your posture and back. Ideally you would sleep on your back to avoid wrinkles but I know not many of us are comfortable in this position. If you like sleeping on your side, put a little pillow under your neck, between the gap of your shoulder and head, keeping your body in a straight position. Sleeping on lots of pillows is not only bad for your posture but also increases the amount of wrinkles and lines on your neck.
7. Use products created for neck and décolletage

Although you can use your facial creams and serums on your neck and décolletage and they will work for your skin perfectly well there are some products on the market specifically created for those areas. I've been trialling some very luxurious products, as well as my mum who got the advantage of them when she was visiting us for a week, and I'm excited to tell you a bit about them.
111Skin Y Lift Neck & Decolletage Serum and Treatment Mask

Inspired by the acceleration of skin ageing in space, prominent plastic surgeon Dr Alexandrides collaborated closely with space scientists on the wellbeing of astronauts and together created the patented NAC Y2 formula, a potent trio of amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants. Formulated to withstand the unparalleled extreme conditions of space travel and informed by the knowledge gained from testing in space conditions, Dr Alexandrides and his team created and perfected a complete range of anti-ageing skincare products. Providing maximum protection from sun exposure, stress and pollution, the cutting-edge 111 Skin collection promotes a youthful and radiant appearance, encourages collagen production and helps skin repair itself.

Using Bio Cellulose technology, these neck and décolletage masks directly target dehydrated, sagging skin for immediate rejuvenating and restorative results.

Key ingredients:
- NAC Y2 – antioxidant trio proven to delay aging and stimulate the body’s natural repair system,
- Progeline – a potent 3 amino acid peptide that improves the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin by remodeling the face contour with a firming and anti-gravity effect,
- Matrixyl 3000 – a peptide duo that specifically stimulates collagen synthesis and skin repair needed to increase skin’s elasticity,
- Hyaluronic Acid – retain moisture in the skin for plumped up effect.

I was sent two of these masks and together with my mum we tried them one evening, the sheet mask covers décolletage and front and sides of the neck, it sticks to the skin so you can easily move around while using it. After 20-30 minutes we remove the masks and both agreed that our skin felt very soft and plumped up, my mum noticed that her skin felt firmer.

Obviously we used the mask once so we could comment only on the temporary effects. I think it's a lovely treat/pamper or before a special occasion to boost the hydration in our skin and make the décolletage and neck look perfected.

111Skin Y Lift Neck & Decolletage Serum

Before and after using the Serum for a week
111SKIN's 'Y Lift' serum is specifically formulated to tone and tighten the skin on your neck and décolletage. This lightweight emollient is packed with powerful firming ingredients including Progeline to rapidly reduce sagging and antioxidant NAC Y2 to stimulate cells' natural repair system. Fine lines and crepiness appear visibly reduced, leaving the whole area looking more sculpted and visibly hydrated.
Niacinamide encourages the natural production of collagen and aids in reversing sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Lactil replenishes lost moisture by mimicking the skin's Natural Moisturising Factors.
Matrixyl 3000 supports the skin's elastin and collagen production to improve elasticity.
The serum sounds really impressive but it's also very expensive so I was expecting some kind of miracle which didn't happen :)
Admittedly my skin is still fairly young looking so it's hard to see much of a change in its firmness but I've noticed that it's smoother and the few lines I have are less pronounced. I've been using the serum daily for over a month and will keep using it to keep the wrinkles and sagginess at bay.
My mum used the serum twice a day for 8 days and while it was too early to see any major difference we both noticed that her neck and décolletage looked better, some lines and wrinkles were less visible and her skin felt smoother and plumper.
I took the above photos on the first and last day of her visit, although I almost forgot to do it before she left so the 'after' photo was taken the very last minute in an artificial lighting. But I hope you can see that her skin looks a bit smoother.
Now, I know that I wouldn't be able to splurge on these products and try them if they weren't sent to me for a consideration and I know many of you won't be able to afford them either. But if you're already in your late 30s, 40s or older and your budget allows you then I think this is a wise investment. Probably much cheaper then some treatments and/or surgeries done in a clinic.
Do you remember to look after your neck as much as your face?
