PROVERB - skincare for the men in your life

If your husband/boyfriend/friend is anything like my hubby, chances are you've been trying for years to persuade him to use some decent facial skincare and stop cleansing his face with bar of soap, haha!
I feel your pain, girl! The shelves in our bathroom are filled with amazing skincare products yet my husband persistently keep buying bar of soap saying that it's the only way he feels like his face is clean. Of course honey, you're just stripping your skin from moisture, it does feel squeaky clean but it's not good in the long term!
So when I was asked a few months ago if I'd like to review some facial skincare for men I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for my husband to break his bad habits. Just as I thought he felt the importance and responsibility of using sent products for a review purposes and he even has been enjoying them. I still have to remind him about his skincare routine every few days and I'm often responded to with 'do I use them every day?' LOL! But he's making progress :)

Proverb skincare for men

The inspiration for PROVERB was born out of its founders who hail from the elite worlds of professional rugby, rowing and skincare; who live and breathe the philosophy, you ‘get out what you put in.’

Founders, Kirstie and Luke Sherriff, met at Oxford University from where Luke signed a professional rugby contract for Harlequins RFC and played in the Premiership and in top flight rugby for 11 years including the England and Great Britain 7s, and Barbarians squads. Understandably he developed a dedication to elite health, diet and wellbeing. In 2009, he joined Kirstie to launch their first natural spa range for women.

Ben Burch, the third founder, is a former Great Britain rower. While officially he is the IT expert, it is his mental drive and resilience that complete the Proverb trio of skin, body and mindset.

They set up Proverb with the mission to inspire men to feel better about their skin, body and mindset through being lifefuelled – Get Out What You Put In.

The range consists of cleanser, scrub, serum, two moisturisers and supplements. All of their products are free from petroleums, parabens, SLS, artificial fragrance, propylene glycol and are first UK full range of skincare to receive EWG verification and certification from the leading US authority on health and toxicity of cosmetic ingredients.

We've been sent three products from the range and I want to tell a little about them. I have tried every product a few times myself so I would knew a bit more about them then just 'they're nice', you know how descriptive men can be ;)

INGREDIENTS FOR UK/US: GLYCERIN, AQUA (WATER), CETEARYL OLIVATE, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) SHELL POWDER, SORBITAN OLIVATE, COCOYL HYDROLYZED ALBUMEN, LACTOBACILLUS/TOMATO FRUIT FERMENT EXTRACT, SODIUM DEHYDROACETATE, CITRUS SINENSIS (ORANGE) PEEL EXTRACT, PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) SEED, XANTHAN GUM, CITRUS AURANTIUM BERGAMIA (BERGAMOT) FRUIT OIL, METHYL ANTHRANILATE, TRIETHYL CITRATE, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (SWEET ORANGE) PEEL OIL, BENZYL ACETATE, CITRUS LIMON (LEMON) PEEL OIL, LEUCONOSTOC/RADISH ROOT FERMENT FILTRATE, LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) PLANT OIL, LAVANDULA HYBRIDA (LAVANDIN) PLANT OIL, LITSEA CUBEBA (MOUNTAIN PEPPER) FRUIT OIL, POGOSTEMOM CABLIN (PATCHOULI) OIL, CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (BITTER ORANGE) LEAF OIL, EUGENIA CARYOPHYLLUS (CLOVE) BUD EXTRACT, OCIMUM BASILICUM (BASIL) LEAF OIL, THYMUS VULGARIS (THYME) FLOWER/LEAF OIL, LIMONENE, LINALOOL

Energising exfoliator formulated with power grains of avocado stone and coconut shell to remove dead skin cells, dirt and debris while protein complex from tomato and egg white help to reduce skin stress, provide powerful anti-oxidants and refresh.

This is a grainy, mechanical exfoliator, a bit too harsh for my skin but considering men's skin is usually thicker and less sensitive then women's I think it's a good one to keep the skin smooth. It has a gel-like consistency which lightly lathers up once massaged into the skin. It has subtle fresh herbal scent.
My husband enjoys using it as he feels like it really gets rid of all the gunk in his pores and leaves his skin much softer. He reaches for it twice a week.

This is a deeply cleansing wash which can be used as a shaving cream. It's deeply hydrating and I've been actually reaching for it every now and then as my morning cleanse because it leaves my skin super refreshed yet very nourished.
It has a clay mask consistency, just a bit softer and creamier and quite strong herbal scent. I can see why it can be used as shaving cream as it's really not drying at all and quite calming on the skin.

As my husband's skin is more on the oily side we chose to test the Oil Balance Moisturiser but there's also one for normal to dry skin.
Anti-blemish actives from superfood anti-oxidant acai oil, andiroba and copaiba balsam help protect the skin. Their anti-inflammatory components coupled with salicylic acid, help reduce the bacteria which cause spots and gently exfoliate the skin's surface helping with blemishes, blackheads and scars. Phytobioactive, natural absorbers help decrease shine and sebum keeping skin balanced while protein complex of tomato and egg white help improve skin hydration and reduce skin stress.

The moisturiser comes in a packaging with pump which is a big plus, it has very lightweight consistency, gets absorbed quickly leaving no greasy or sticky residue whatsoever but beautifully hydrated and soft skin. I used it couple of times and was really impressed with how undetectable it was on my skin yet it left it very comfortable without any tight feeling which is quite common for me when using moisturisers formulated for oily skin.
This moisturiser is the one product that my husband has been using the most consistently and it helps keeping his skin balanced, soft and clearer.

Overall I'm quite impressed with this new skincare line for men, from the simple yet eye catching packaging to products formulas. My husband has started using good quality skincare on his face, albeit not very consistently yet but they definitely have motivated him to take better care of his skin.
