Happy New Year guys! Hope you had a great festive time and a good start to 2017!
I thoroughly enjoyed my blogging break over Christmas and New Year but I'm back to the blogging world with my favourite beauty discoveries of 2016. I tried and used lots of products last year, many of them have made onto my favourites list but today I want to share with you only those little gems that I discovered in 2016, not all of them are new releases, they were just new to me. I was initially planning to talk about makeup and skincare in one post but I've realised that it would be a bit too long and I don't want to bore you, in fact I want you to get as excited about these products as I am and try them in 2017 if you haven't already.
I don't have a product from every makeup category because I wanted to talk only about new discoveries that rocked my beauty world last year.
I've tried quite a few base primers but one that has impressed me the most was the Hylamide HA Blur, it smoothes my skin, blurs large pores and wrinkles, helps my foundation to last longer and it's not heavy or greasy on my skin, in fact it feels quite hydrating which is understandable because it contains Hyaluronic Acid.
I was on a real foundation kick at the beginning of 2016 and have bought many of them but only two deserve the spot in todays' post.
Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation* is a hybrid of makeup and skincare, with broad spectrum SPF 30 it's perfect for everyday use to run errands. It has quite light coverage and it stays a bit tacky for quite some time but once set with powder it looks beautiful on the skin, it magically blurs all imperfection and it lasts all day long. I've been using it also under some foundations as a primer and it extends their wear time significantly, it's like a glue that holds the makeup. It doesn't make my skin very oily. It's an awesome foundation. I like to apply it with my fingers, just like I would do with my SPF product, by patting it into my skin.
Another awesome foundation is the Milani Conceal + Perfect 2-in1 Foundation + Concealer. It provides a medium to full coverage but it looks very natural on the skin, it has beautiful satin finish and it lasts up to 10 hours on my skin without breaking up or wearing off. It doesn't make me oily, it blends beautifully, it doesn't cling to dry patches, seriously one of the best foundation I've tried.
I always set my foundation and concealer with powder to ensure that my makeup lasts longer, my skin doesn't get too shiny and for my blush and bronzer to blend easier. I've tried many of them and I have found some great ones but the most impressive is the RCMA No Colour Powder which has been raved about by many beauty gurus and for a good reason, it's amazing! It's undetectable on the skin yet it sets makeup beautifully and keeps my skin shine free for longer without being drying. It's also fantastic to set my under eye concealer as it doesn't accentuate my fine lines like many other powders do.
Cheek products and finishing powders
Ever since getting the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit palette for Christmas 2015 I've been in love with the quality of the powders so of course I had to get the new one Surreal Light palette (review) when it was released around September 2016. If you're a fan of that naturally luminous finish to your skin then I'm sure you'd love Hourglass powders. They're absolutely beautiful, super finely milled, silky soft and give subtle 'glow from within' look on the skin. I'm obsessed and reach for either of the palettes every time I do my makeup. I rarely use any other bronzer nowadays and their blushes are my favourites as well. I also like to dust one of the finishing powders across my face, after setting my foundation with the RCMA powder, to achieve a luminous finish to the skin.
2016 was a year when I invested in a custom palette filled with Makeup Geek eyeshadows, I currently own over 50 shades and I can't stop collecting them. I find them very good quality, they're pigmented, blend beautifully one with each other and last well on the eyes. There's an amazing selection of shades, from matte, metallic to duo-chrome and foiled finishes. I can't pick my favourites because all the shades I have I love but you can check this post for some swatches although my collection has grown a bit more since then.
Another amazing discovery of 2016 has been Colourpop eyeshadows, I'm absolutely in love with their formula. They're mousse-y, almost creamy, intensely pigmented and they last on the eyes for hours without budging. I've only tried those with metallic or pearly finish because I think that's where the company really shines but I will be giving matte a try next time I place an order. These eyeshadows are stunning, they shine on the eyes like no others, glittery shades transform to the lid without loosing their beautiful finish and effect. I am obsessed and wish Colourpop was easily available in UK so I could feed my guilty pleasure of collecting their products more often.
Let me know if you'd like to see my Colourpop collection with swatches and I'll be happy to do that.
Colourpop has also massively impressed me with their lip products, I've tried many of them last year and I can't say anything bad about them. My absolute favourite formulas have to be the Ultra Satin Lip and Lippie Stix Matte X.
Ultra Satin Lips are liquid lipsticks which don't dry completely matte but are very opaque and last easily up to 6 hours without the need of touch up and if you do need to reapply them they're easy to do so. The finish is semi-matte/satin, they don't feel or look drying on the lips, don't flake or accentuate the lip lines and even though they do transfer a bit they're my perfect liquid lipsticks formula because of how comfortable they are to wear and how intensely pigmented and opaque they are. I have 6 different shades and non of them disappointed me. My absolute favourite are Calypso, Frick 'N Frack and Lyin' King.
Another fantastic matte lipstick formula is in form of the Lippie Stix with Matte X finish. They're completely matte but are super lightweight, they apply on the lips without dragging, feel comfortable and last for a long time with very minimal transfer. They do accentuate flaky lips just a bit but don't settle in lip lines and look smooth and silky. I have only two shades from this line, Poppin' and Cami, but both are stunning.
From left: UD Ravenswood (Cream), UD Hitch Hike (Comfort Matte), NYX Merlot, NYX Bloody Mary, NYX Tea Rose, Colourpop Matte X Poppin, Colourpop Matte X Cami, Colourpop USL Calypso, Colourpop USL Frick 'N Frack, Colourpop USL Lyin' King
NYX is a brand I finally explored more in 2016 and their Matte Lipsticks are my favourite. Many people rave about their Soft Matte Creams but I'm not a fan of their formula but the traditional lipsticks are the bomb. They're creamy, yet have semi-matte/satin finish, very pigmented, feel hydrating on the lips and last for hours even with some light eating and drinking. I don't know why people don't rave about them more because for me they're fantastic and the formula rival much more expensive brands. The only downside is the cheap packaging but I can overlook that because of how affordable and great the lipsticks are. I have 8 different shades and love them all but picked 3 of my most favourite to swatch them for you.
Another lipsticks that were a massive hit for me in 2016 are the Urban Decay Vice lipsticks with Comfort Matte and Cream finish. They have amazing pigmentation, great staying power and feel incredibly comfortable on the lips. The brand has revamped the range adding lots more shades and changing the packaging which looks now super pretty and all I want to do is to collect as many of their lipsticks as possible. Give me UD Comfort Matte lipsticks over MAC or Charlotte Tilbury any day!
I've never though I would be impressed by a brow gel but here I am talking about one in my best beauty discoveries of 2016 :)
The Benefit Ready, Set, Brow! Gel is amazing at keeping my brows in place all day without making them looking crunchy or hard, it's absolutely fantastic! I've been using the deluxe sample I got in a magazine for a few months and need to buy a full size because my brows can't be without it.
Also from Benefit, their Goof Proof Brow Pencil in shade 3 has become my absolute favourite brow pencil, leaving behind Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wizz and Brow Definer. It's quite similar to ABH Brow Definer but there's something about it's formula that I like it better and the shade is just perfect for my brows.
Last but not least my favourite nail polish discovery has to be the new Essie range Gel Couture. I have only one shade of nail polish but what has impressed me the most is the top coat which not only adds amazing shine to my nails but extends the wear time of any nail polish I apply underneath. I have many Maybelline nail polishes as they're one of my favourite formulas and together with the Essie Gel Couture Topcoat they last on my nails for 5 days without chipping which was unheard for me before.
So that's it from me today, all my absolute favourite beauty discoveries in the makeup category.
Have you tried any of these products? Do you love them as much as I do?
