1990s was the decade of my teenage and early 20s years and I feel a great sentiment when I think of that time. Throughout high school I was a big fan of the grunge style and music, wearing flannel shirts, Converse and Doc Martens, listening to Nirvana, Metallica, Pearl Jam :) Then my style softened a bit, Alanis Morisette, Sheryl Crow, No Doubt were some of my favourite singers/bands, my clothes were less moody and more feminine and I started wearing more makeup. Never liked Britney Spears or Spice Girls though :) Beverly Hills, 90210 was my favourite series (I was totally in love with Dylan, lol!), followed by Friends, of course. It was a great decade and very different in trends to 1980s (check my post here).
Makeup in 90s was the opposite of the OTT colourful 80s looks. Everything looked more natural, used colours were on the nudes scale. Although there were some disasters as well, like the quite skinny, often over plucked brows which me and several of my friends were guilty of doing and now I'm paying the price for that in having very sparse brows. Another trend that was very characteristic in 90s was a brown lipstick, from quite muted greyish shade to full on brown, matte finish was popular but frost was also in vogue. Skin was kept looking natural but totally matte with very subtle nude blush on the cheeks. Eyes were defined but nothing too dramatic, usually bronzy shades were used. If you were a follower of the grunge trend you'd be more likely to smudge black eyeliner around your eyes for that moody, smokey eyes.
To recreate the 90s makeup look I applied my favourite primer Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot and L'Oreal Infallible 24H Matte foundation, to conceal my under eye area I used Maybelline The Eye Eraser concealer and set everything with the L'Oreal True Match powder for that flawless, matte look.
To subtly define my cheeks and add a touch of colour I used Mac Factor Crème Puff Blush in Nude Mauve.
To fill in my brows I reached for my Inglot Brow Pomade in #16 and I made them to look a bit thinner then I would normally do now.
For my eyes I used shade Hazelnut all over my lid with Milk Chocolate to blend it out in the crease (eyeshadows from Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette), I defined my lashes with Triple Fudge and applied a few coats of Eye of Horus Goddes Mascara.
To fit in with the 90s makeup trend I used Japonesque lipstick in shade 07 which is terracotta brown colour and I think it looks very 90s.
I also kept my hair quite flat and straight as this kind of 'style' was quite popular in the 90s grunge trend which I was a fan of for a few years.
And this is the finished look.
What do you think of the 90s trends in makeup? Did you grow up in that decade? Were you a fan of that super famous Jennifer Aniston (aka Rachel) haircut? I loved it :)
