Splurge or save? #3 Too Faced 'Chocolate Bar' palette vs I ♡ Makeup 'I Heart Chocolate' palette

Hello!
First of all, I wanted to quickly tell you about my new blog design, if you're my regular reader you must have noticed already :) Mummy's Beauty Corner had a makeover! I like a small change every now and then, like moving the furniture around the house, new hair etc. so it was just natural that I wanted a new look for my blog as well. I really like the new design, it's cleaner and easier to read. I hope you will also find it nice and it will enhance your reading experience :)

Now let's kick off the post!
Today I want to share with you my opinion and comparison of two very similar palettes, one from the higher end and one from a budget brand. Makeup Revolution and its sister brand I ♡ Makeup have become well known for their good quality, affordable products and lots of "dupes" they create. Having the original Too Faced 'Chocolate Bar' palette, (review), RRP £39, I decided to compare it to the cheaper version: the I ♡ Makeup 'I Heart Chocolate' palette, RRP £7.99.

Let's start with the packaging, obviously both are inspired on the chocolate bar. Too Faced metal tin is more elegant looking while I ♡ Makeup plastic case is cuter and more fun. Both have secure closures with the cheaper version actually safer, it won't open accidentally and that's what happened to me a few times with the more expensive palette as the magnets are not very strong. When you open the Too Faced palette you're greeted by a smell of chocolate as the eye shadows are infused with real Cocoa. The I ♡ Makeup palette has a very faint smell of something sweet but definitely it's far from the chocolate-y scent.

Both palettes have mirrors inside, with the I Heart Chocolate palette one being bigger and easier to use. In both cases there are plastic sheets with names of the eye shadows. I do prefer the names from the Too Faced palette as they're really chocolate inspired but it's just names, not a big deal. I ♡ Makeup, on the other hand, always come up with some fun, songs inspired names.

As for what it really matters, the eye shadows, they look almost identical in the pans and are placed in the same order with only two of them with swapped positions.

Now probably you are curious about the quality of the cheaper palette, like the rest of the Makeup Revolution/I ♡ Makeup eye shadows I've tried, they are great quality and not only for the price, they're genuinely good eye shadows. They're very pigmented, smooth, they blend really well and last, with a primer, all day on my lids without fading or creasing. There is a bit of fallout with some of the shades but I also experience that with the Too Faced eye shadows, especially the ones containing glitter. When I started swatching the eye shadows from both palettes comparing the colours I noticed that some of the glittery shades are less gritty and softer in the I ♡ Makeup palette but also they produce slightly more fallout than their equivalents in the Too Faced palette. Some of the I ♡ Makeup eye shadows are actually more pigmented/intense than the more expensive ones. So in overall I'd say that there is little difference in term of quality between those two palettes, the original Chocolate Bar being slightly better.

Now let's compare the swatches.
First row.

You can see there are some little differences between eye shadows, especially Black Forrest Truffle and Love Torn as they have different undertones, also Gilded Ganache is more olive toned than its cheaper equivalent.

Second row.

In this row I can see more differences between shades, Salted Caramel and Thank Friday don't look the same, as you can see the last three shades are slightly different - the I ♡ Makeup versions are more intense.

Third row.

Here the shades are very look a like except What a Way to Go which is more of a berry version of Cherry Cordial.

Below is a picture of a simple eye makeup look created using the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette on one eye and the I ♡ Makeup I Heart Chocolate palette on the other eye. I used shades that look different when swatched to see how do they look on the eyes:
Strawberry Bon Bon/Meet Chocolate  in the inner half of the lid,
Cherry Cordial/What a Way to Go in the outer corner,
Milk Chocolate/One More Piece in the crease,
Triple Fudge/Stolen Chocolate - to line the upper and lower lashes,
and Champagne Truffle/Endorphins Ready in the inner corners.

As you can see the I ♡ Makeup eye is more on the berry/plummy side but other that both eyes look very similar.

Now onto the verdict, splurge or save?

In my opinion, if you can afford it I'd say go for the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette as it's just beautiful and smells delicious but if you can't justify spending that much money or you're just starting your makeup journey the I ♡ Makeup I Heart Chocolate palette is a fantastic alternative. It's not identical but the shades are pretty close and you still can create very similar looks while not really skipping on the quality but saving good amount of money.

Do you own any of the palette? Would you splurge or save? Let me know your opinion.

  1. Great review! I think if I had the choice (and the money) I would go for the too faced chocolate bar, as the colours are slightly more muted... but the I heart chocolate palette is definitely a good alternative! I can't believe how similar it is!!

  3. I love dupes! I keep eyeing up the Makeup Revolution palette but I know that I wouldn't use it that much as I only use matte shades at the moment. However, it does look really nice :)

  5. Great review Dagmara :) I think you compared the two really well and having a look at them, there seems to be very little difference in the actual powders. I would definitely save with this one :) xx

  6. This was a really helpful review, I've been wanting to buy the Too Faced palette for aaages but can't seem to justify it as I've already got quite a few high end palettes... I'm very tempted by the cheaper version though! Thank you! x

  7. Amazing comparison - thank you for the side-by-side swatches :) I think I'll be sticking to MUR on this one as I don't even use all of the shades as some of them are too bright so it'd be a waste to get the Too Faced one xx

  9. I knew these palettes were similar but had no idea just how similar they are. I have the Makeup Revolution version and to be honest I think I am satisfied enough with that as there's so many other palettes I want to get my hands on haha x

  11. Brilliant review, Dagmara! I knew they had slight differences, but I am glad to see it is literally just slight. I don't use every single shade in my Too Faced Palette, so I wouldn't ever repurchase it, even if it is my favourite. I just couldn't justify it.

  12. Crazy identical, hard to choose! I almost prefer the look of the cheaper palette but could barely tell the difference on your eye makeup. Awesome review :)

  13. Great post! I have been wondering how these two palettes compare for a while. I was surprised when you said the Too Faced is slightly better at the end, as I got the impression it was the other way around for what you were saying throughout the post. I'm a bit suspicious with Makeup Rev. Got a cheek and eye palette from them before and didn't really like the quality of the shadows. They were so not pigmented. Since then I'm a bit 'meh' about their eye products. Maybe the formulas are different. :) x

    1. The difference between both palettes is really subtle and while some of the shades swatch better in the Makeup Revolution palette I think the Too Faced ones perform slightly better and look that bit more unique. And you can't beat the chocolate scent :) If I've seen a post like this before purchasing my Too Faced palette I would seriously hesitate with buying it. In general I'm a fan of MR eye shadows, I don't think you can get better quality for the price but I did noticed that the I ♡ Makeup range is slightly better, I'm not sure if that's true but that's how I feel about them :) x
