Makeup Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray - review

Makeup Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray

Hello!
Makeup setting spray is a product which I started using only last year but since I've discovered its benefits I've been reaching for it nearly every day. I've used before e.l.f. setting spray, Urban Decay All Nighter and also recently the Makeup Revolution Amazing Makeup Fixing Spray which I really enjoy, so when I was given the opportunity to try the new version of it, the Oil Control Fixing Spray, I didn't hesitate. My skin is combination/oily and even though recently has been on a drier side I still get shiny during the day. Depending on a foundation I use and if I use a primer underneath I normally need to blot/powder my face after 3-5 hours after applying my makeup so oil controlling setting spray seemed like a great idea.
The Makeup Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray* (RRP £5) claims to "help deflect surface shine for a natural matte finish. High Tech ingredients keep foundation and eye makeup in place for that 'just-applied' natural look lasting up to 12 hours".
The spray comes in an aerosol plastic bottle containing 100ml of product, the nozzle distribute a fine mist but not as fine as, for example, the Urban Decay spray. There is practically no scent to the liquid and even though it contains alcohol I can't smell it and it didn't dry out my skin.

Makeup Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray

I've been using the Oil Control Fixing Spray for a week with different foundations, mostly with those that are not particularly shine control so the spray had the chance to speak for itself.

So what do I think of the spray?

Firstly, I have to disagree with the claim that it leaves the skin matte, it doesn't. As every setting spray, it helps blending all the makeup products nicely together, it takes away the powdery look if we use powder products and leaves a beautiful, naturally luminous look to the skin which I absolutely love and I think that's the main advantage of using this spray.
I've noticed that it does help slightly with the oil control, minimising the need of blotting/powdering the face throughout the day  but it doesn't stop the natural skin oils come through makeup. If you thought this product would be the answer to your prayers for stopping your skin from being very oily, it's not. You'll still get shiny but probably a bit less than normal. I also used the spray before applying my foundation and then on top  of my finished makeup and I think this way I got the best results in terms of oil control.
While using this spray my makeup definitely lasts longer looking good. My foundation normally quickly disappears from my nose and chin but using the spray the wear time of my foundation in those areas was extended for an hour or so depending what foundation I used.

Would I recommend the Makeup Revolution Oil Control Fixing Spray?

Definitely! It's a great budget option of makeup setting spray which makes your makeup look much better, it extends its longevity and helps minimising the shine. Bear in mind though that it might not be too much of a help with oil control if your skin is very oily. Also if your skin is dry or/and sensitive I'm not sure if the presence of alcohol would do you any good. I wish the mist was finer but it's still fine enough not too disturb the makeup, you just have to remember to spray it from a distance of 8-10 inches away.

Have you tried the Makeup Revolution Fixing Sprays? Do you use makeup setting spray? If so, which one is your favourite? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I haven't tried this but I was intrigued by it when I saw it on their site, I was actually waiting to see if anyone was doing a review on it haha, at the moment I'm using mac fix+ which has actually almost run out, it would be nice to find a cheaper alternative though, and being my skin is more on the normal/dry side this sounds perfect for me! When I make my next order I'll definately be picking this up :) thanks for the review x

  3. I wish I could try out Makeup Revolution in the US. I wonder if it will make its way over here? Maybe it already has and I just am not aware of it yet lol. This sounds like a good setting spray. I'm all out of setting sprays at the moment and am probably going to re-purchase e.l.f. to tide me over for something else!

I've never used a makeup setting spray before but it would definitely be something I'd be interested in trying especially in the summer because my makeup always comes off so quickly then!

  6. Great and honest review! :) Been tempted to buy this for a while now. Love the idea of my makeup looking more natural and the fact it doesn't leave the skin matte is a plus, as I have dry skin and would not like a flat finish anyway. But the alcohol would most likely be a problem as it can dry my skin further, so I avoid it. I wonder if they do one for dry skin without alcohol? Will look it up. :) xx

  7. I love using setting spray as it helps my skin looking natural and glowy :) The other setting spray MR has to offer contains alcohol as well so maybe try to see if other brands make something more suitable for dry skin :) x

  8. Thanks hun! I've been loving using setting sprays, all the powder that I put on my face magically turns in to this luminous finish :) x

  10. I liked the e.l.f one even though it's not the best I've tried. I'm not sure when/if Makeup Revolution will be available in US but you certainly can order their products online as they ship worldwide :) x

  11. Ah shame! Will do, as my skin just doesn't react well to alcohol. :) x

  12. I've just checked ingredients on the Urban Decay sprays and they all contain alcohol :( Have you tried thermal waters, like the La Roche-Posay one? I love that one :) x

  13. Yes, I have but they don't do anything in terms of the makeup lasting longer. :( Oh well. x

  14. Such a good review. I love the Urban Decay all night spray but I have also been using the original MUR one and I also love that. I think that I will keep on with the MUR one in the future as it does the same thing for a lot less in the price. Not sure that this one will be good for me as I don't suffer from oily skin.

  16. My face usually gets a bit shiny throughout the day but my makeup still stays on quite well so I really want to try this and see if it would help me with the oiliness. Thanks for the great review! :)x

  18. I get quite oily in my t-zone and dry everywhere else so I think I need to give this a go as it sounds like my skin would benefit from it. I'm almost finished my UD version so great to know there's a budget option out there x

  19. I really liked the UD setting spray but there is very little difference between the UD and MR one so considering the price difference the MR is a great alternative :) x

  20. You're welcome Anu! I hope the spray will minimise the shine on your skin :)

  21. Hope you'll like it! I wouldn't say it eliminates the shine but definitely helps minimising it :) x

  22. I found very little difference between this one and the original MR fixing spray, so you may just stick to the original one, especially if your skin is not oily :) x

  25. It's a really good setting spray, especially considering how cheap it is :)

  26. I was curious about it, but since I don't have oily skin, I opted not to get it. I wonder if because I don't have oily skin, it would keep my skin perfectly matte~?

  27. It doesn't make the skin matte, rather naturally luminous, but helps to minimise the shine during the day so if your skin is not oily, it would just prolong the wear time of your makeup and make it look nice and glow-y :)
