Diorskin Star foundation - is it worth the hype?

Hello!
If you've seen my latest 'Haul post' you know that I treated myself to the latest Dior foundation Diorskin Star. After hearing and reading so many positive reviews and considering it's THE Dior I didn't hesitate and without even trying out a sample first I just handed out my money and became a happy owner of the new foundation in the shade 020 Light Beige :)

Can we just take a second to appreciate the beautiful, elegant glass bottle with a silver pump that precisely give the amount of product you want? Obviously, you can't expect anything less from Dior, right?
What does Dior say about their new foundation?

"Inspired by the professional illuminating techniques and expertise of its makeup artists, Dior invents Diorskin Star, its 1st brightening foundation: a weightless fluid capable of recreating the spectacular and perfecting light of Dior's studios.
The complexion is instantly more luminous and visibly more even. A new generation of hollow silica beads captures and diffuses light in a correcting halo with no shine. At the same time, colour-filter pigments neutralise colour imbalances to recreate the perfect light. The complexion is clarified with a purer, more dazzling and long-lasting light. Anti-"light-trap" skincare ingredients help reduce the appearance of dark areas, pigment spots and redness."

Pretty impressive claims, aren't they?
So what do I think?

Diorskin Star foundation feels very light on the skin, blends easily, (my favourite method of applying it is with damp Beauty Blender) and the coverage it gives is medium but you can build it up without making it look cakey. It has a light pleasant scent to it which fades quickly so you don't have to worry about it if you're sensitive to fragranced products. The foundation contains SPF30 which is great to protect your skin from harmful sun rays.

What I love the most about this foundation is the finish it gives, the skin looks really natural but perfected and healthy, it doesn't look shiny nor greasy, just kind of luminous. The foundation doesn't cling to any dry patches nor sit in my pores or fine lines.

The picture below shows my face without foundation (left side) and just after applying the Diorskin Star (right side).

Unfortunately that's where my love for this foundation ends. Because the beautiful finish doesn't last on my skin longer than 3-4 hours. Around this time I notice my skin becoming shiny and the foundation starts wearing off , especially on my nose and chin, even after setting the foundation with a powder just right after application 6 hours is the maximum time for this foundation on my skin as it starts to separate, accentuate any dry patches that were not visible before and just doesn't look good anymore.
I'm quite disappointed with it, considering it's a high end foundation with the price tag of £32, I expected it to look good on my skin not only for couple of hours, especially if it claims to be long wearing.
I will still enjoy using it for any occasion when I'm not planning to wear my makeup longer than 4 hours but that's really a shame as I love how it looks on my skin just right after application.
I tried using different primers underneath and the wear time was slightly extended but not satisfying enough.
I'm guessing if you have dry, normal skin you may have different experience with Diorskin Star but for my combination/oily skin is definitely not the best.

I wish now I hadn't believe blindly in the hype around this foundation and got the sample to test it out first. I wouldn't have wasted the money had I tried it for a full day.

Have you tried Diorskin Star foundation? What's your favourite high end foundation? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Have you tried a primer before hand? Would that help? Also, would you be able to return it?
I absolutely hate it when an expensive product falls short of love after purchase . ugh.

    1. I tried to use primer underneath and it was slightly better but it's just annoying that you are paying so much money and the product is not much better, if any, than drugstore foundation. xx

  2. This is my new go to foundation (in the same shade SNAP!) I get a whole days wear out of it but I do use a hell of a lot of fixing sprays because that's how I finish any look :)

Shame that you haven't had a very good experience with it :(

    1. Yes, it's a real shame as I love how it initially look on my skin. I might try with the setting spray :) x

  3. The initial look of the foundation is really good - you can see that it evens out skin tone and just makes your skin look really smooth and fresh. What a pity about the wearing time though - this would definitely not survive on my skin after having read your review. Will be giving this one a miss :) x

  7. Such a shame about the longevity of this as it truly looks beautiful on you and so flawless but there's nothing worse than a foundation starting to separate and stick to dry patches after a few hours of wear time. Definitely get a sample next time you try high end foundations :D x

    1. I love the initial finish this foundation gives me but it's just look like a cheap drugstore foundation after a few hours. Definitely not worth the money in my opinion. But I've learnt the lesson and next time I want to treat myself to expensive foundation I will be trying the sample first ;) x

  8. It is such a petty that the wear time is not good as it looks like it has a good finish. I do agree that you should expect more weartime esp with its price. Xx

    1. Yes, I am very disappointed that the foundation doesn't last well on my skin, buying Dior you expect excellence but unfortunately it wasn't the case this time. Thank you for stopping by! x

  9. How interesting! I have dry skin and it didn't work for me either. It seems to cling on my dry patches I didn't even know existed. I wasn't excited about it. Might give it a try for longer to make up my mind fully, but so far, I'm not a huge fan. x

  11. I tried the Diorskin nude and the formula was ok but the colour selection was not what I'd expect for a high-end brands so I ended up with something really beige-y and off. Not believing the hype around this one now either! xx

    1. The shade for me is perfect but unfortunately the foundation doesn't last on my skin like I would expect a high end foundation to do. Once again I'm proved not to believe blindly in the hype surrounding any product. x
